US marriage rates over time

The rate was 8.2 per 1,000 people in 2000 and 6.1 in 2023. It fell to 5.1 in 2020. A change in the rate alone does not explain why people marry.

Three things to keep with the number

  1. The population. Official marriage records, surveyed couples, households, and bank customers are different groups. Their figures are not interchangeable.
  2. The measure. A mean is not a median. A cost per guest is not a gift recommendation. Spending growth is not a wedding-price index.
  3. The date. Cite the data year as well as the report. “2026 edition” is the date of this collection, not the year of every wedding counted.

A cost-source detail: the June 2026 cost article gives $34,200; the February study release gives $34,000. We use the later, more detailed cost article for that figure.
